I finally had the opportunity to watch the new documentary form Franklin Springs Media on family worship entitled: Gather the Family.
People seem to wonder why I take so much interest in family aspects such as family worship and homeschooling when I am still single. To me the answer is simple. Whether God chooses to given me a wife and children or not I believe it is wise to be prepared in case. Many people wait until they are in a situation to learn how to handle it, but I believe that if we study in advance and learn from others successes and failures we will be ahead in life. Even if it is God’s plan that I remain single I think it wise to study and learn so as to be a help to others. Don’t forget that God used a man single all His life to save sinners and another single man to teach on marriage and family. That is why I believe studying family worship is so important.
The video starts out with a voice over from R.C. Sproul Jr. that really makes the point right off as he describes worship as joy. I think that is where it must begin. This isn’t just a chore to be done, but it should be a time of joy in the Lord. Remember, this is not a duty as though you were coming to appease an angry king, but rather you’re coming to enjoy a Father.
I love that this documentary looks at several different families. They show families with older kids that can help in leading, families out numbered with children, and even a single parent family.
They didn’t set forth a new formula as though “this is how family worship is done,” but rather they showed the importance AND simplicity of family worship. It isn’t about spending hours a day reading and praying, but about making the time to show your family that God’s Word, worship, and prayer are central to the family.
Even if it just a few minutes a day it is crucial to lead a family in a God honoring way. As on of the interviewees stated:
“If you make time for God then He’ll make time for everything else.”
So “Gather the Family” and find the time to worship as a family and if you want further encouragement then make you find the time to pick up this excellent DVD.
